(<a href=\"http:\/\/localrootswooster.com\/\">http:\/\/localrootswooster.com\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The core idea is\u00a0to create a\u00a0<strong>resilient local community market\u00a0<\/strong>by employing a model with l<strong>ower costs<\/strong>\u00a0(because of significant contributions from volunteers who care about the mission) and\u00a0<strong>shared-risk<\/strong>\u00a0(items are sold on consignment, rather than taking on debt to stock inventory).\u00a0The store&#8217;s design makes it<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0<strong>Easy for buyers to buy:<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Convenient location and hours<\/li>\n<li>Year-round and indoors<\/li>\n<li>Ability to pick-and-choose among many local producers<\/li>\n<li>Single checkout, with\u00a0all the usual payment options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\u00a0<strong>Easy for producers to sell:\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Producers set their own price<\/li>\n<li>90% of the selling price goes back to the producer where it belongs\u00a0(no brokers or middle-men)<\/li>\n<li>Fast drop off<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t have to be onsite\u00a0(lower staffing costs)<\/li>\n<li>Online pre-sale bulk orders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jessica.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-579\" src=\"http:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jessica-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jessica-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/jessica.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Local producers, consumer advocates and organizers joined in a conversation about how this idea might work locally.\u00a0 Lots of ideas and the collective genius of the community emerged quickly.\u00a0 Several task groups discussed topics from potential location to how to organize and manage a store.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Eikleberry, Market Manager and founding member of the Board of Directors of Local Roots in Wooster Ohio, spoke by Skype about the development of the project, how the business is organized, and the contribution it has made to the local community.\u00a0 She then answered questions from the Amherst audience.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica will be available at the next meeting to answer more questions.\u00a0 In addition, several producers will join her to talk about their experience selling through the Local Roots store.\u00a0\u00a0 Ideas and questions were collected to help continue and focus the discussion at the next meeting on:<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Tuesday, May 29 at 7:00-9:00pm in the Amherst Town Hall<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/photobucket-7603-13377379364711.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-581\" src=\"http:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/photobucket-7603-13377379364711-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/photobucket-7603-13377379364711-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/photobucket-7603-13377379364711.jpg 767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Please join us (and bring a friend) to help work toward a cooperative venture that supports local livelihoods and community\u00a0investment.\u00a0 This is your opportunity to help create a year-round outlet for local products.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t join us, please share your questions or suggestions on this blog (below).\u00a0 <em><strong>Hope to see you next Tuesday!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The &#8220;<em>All Things Local<\/em>&#8221;
