{"id":1380,"date":"2012-10-19T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-19T15:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/?p=1380"},"modified":"2012-10-19T11:05:45","modified_gmt":"2012-10-19T16:05:45","slug":"community-partner-organizations-recognized-for-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transitionamherst.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/community-partner-organizations-recognized-for-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Partner Organizations Recognized for Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the October 13th event All Thing&#8217;s Community: Celebrating Amherst in Transition, 26 community groups and individuals were recognized for their work building a more sustainable, vibrant and resilient community.<\/p>\n<p>One of the aspects of Amherst and the surrounding towns that make this area so special is seeing how many are doing what we call &#8220;Transition&#8221; work. These groups and individuals that were recognized October 13th were just a few of the many who have been working hard and putting their heart and soul into making our community better.<\/p>\n<p>We appreciate the contributions that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">all<\/span> of the people and groups are making.\u00a0 It is the work, the dedication and the vision of those who came before us, and of all of these groups and individuals that has brought us this far, and on whose foundation we will continue to build a more resilient, vibrant and sustainable community.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Amherst Recycling<\/em> <em>Committee<\/em><\/span><em><\/em><span><em>\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>subsidizing rain barrels and composters<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Amherst Survival<\/em> Center<\/span> &#8211; providing services and goods for those in need<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Ron<\/em><em> Bohonowicz<\/em><\/span> &#8211; Town and School Facilities Manager, installing energy efficient windows at the Middle School<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Brookfield Farm CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Stephanie<\/em><em> Ciccarello<\/em><\/span> &#8211; Town Sustainability Coordinator, helping Amherst attain Green Community status which will fund new LED street lights; and helping organize the new Growing Food in Community initiative.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Collective<\/em> Copies<\/span> &#8211; a cooperative business which donates services locally<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Food for Thou<\/em><em>gh<\/em><em>t<\/em><\/span><em> Books<\/em> &#8211; cooperative business which provides public meeting space<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>John Gerber<\/em><\/span><em> <\/em><em>&#8211; who spearheaded a chicken regulations update; who teaches sustainable agriculture at UMass and is involved in many other resilience initiatives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Green Amherst Project, Amherst<\/em> College<\/span> &#8211; improving energy efficiency and new farm initiative at Amherst College<em><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em> Greening Grace, Grace<\/em><\/span><em> Church<\/em> &#8211; Fix-it Cafe, a recent mend and repair event<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Green Sanctuary, Unitarian Universalist<\/em><\/span><em> Society<\/em> &#8211; Local Food Project<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Hampshire College Farm CSA\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Hitchcock Center for the Environment <\/em><\/span>&#8211; for 50 years of nature and sustainability education<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Many Hands Farm Corps CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>John Musante<\/em><\/span> &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>North Amherst Community Farm<\/em><\/span>&#8211; community effort to buy farmland<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Not Bread Alone<\/em><\/span> &#8211; serving three free meals a week<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Old Friends Farm CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Pioneer Valley Heritage Grains CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Pioneer Valley Relocalization Project<\/em><\/span> &#8211; educating through its column in the Amherst Bulletin, and advocating with town government for public transportation and an end to sprawl<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Simple Gifts Farm CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Small Ones Farm CSA<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>South Congregational Church<\/em><\/span> &#8211; prioritizing improvements in energy efficiency and installing solar PV panels<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Transition Hampshire College<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>UMass Permaculture Project<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the October 13th event All Thing&#8217;s Community: Celebrating Amherst in Transition, 26 community groups and individuals were recognized for their work building a more sustainable, vibrant and resilient community.
